Of course, if you have more time, you can always add in extra activities or extend your stay. But for those with limited time, one day is definitely enough to get a taste of this beautiful city.
Getting to Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a well-connected airport and is easily accessible by train from other major European cities. The main airport in Amsterdam is Schiphol, offering direct flights to and from many destinations around the world. From the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, you can take a train directly to Amsterdam Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal), located in the heart of the city. Another cheaper mode of transportation to get to Amsterdam is by bus. For example, you can take a FlixBus from Brussels to Amsterdam in just 3 hours!
Best Time to Visit Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a city that can be enjoyed all year, with each season offering its unique charm and a variety of events and activities. The best time to visit Amsterdam all depends on your interests, so here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during each season:
Spring

Tulip Season: Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Amsterdam, especially for flower lovers. The world-famous Keukenhof Gardens are in full bloom from late March to mid-May, showcasing millions of tulips and other flowers in a vibrant display of colors.
King’s Day: Celebrated on April 27th, King’s Day is one of the biggest national holidays in the Netherlands. Amsterdam in particular hosts a massive street party with markets, music, and everyone dressed in orange.

How to Get Around During Your One Day in Amsterdam
Getting from place to place in Amsterdam is easy! Walking and biking are the most popular modes of transportation, as the city is known for its bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly streets. You will see bikes EVERYWHERE you go! We’ve never seen so many bikes in our lives—there are thousands of them, making for a cute and unique environment!
You can also take advantage of the efficient public transportation system, which includes buses, trams, and trains. We found the public transportation very easy to understand and appreciated how clean it was. You can opt to buy a one-day GVB day ticket, which costs about 9 euros and allows you unlimited travel on all GVB trams, buses, and metros for the entire day.
Is the I Amsterdam City Card Worth It?
The I Amsterdam City Card is a popular choice for tourists, as it offers free entry to over 60 museums and attractions, as well as unlimited use of public transportation. The card also includes discounts at various restaurants, shops, and tours.
But is the I Amsterdam City Card really worth it? It depends on your travel plans and budget. A 24-hour city card costs 60 euros, so if you plan on visiting multiple museums and attractions during your day, the card can save you money. However, if you only plan on visiting a few places or don’t mind paying individual admission fees, then it may not be worth the cost.
The best way to figure out whether it’s worth it is to visit their website and see which attractions are included that you plan on visiting. Add up the admission fees for those attractions. If the total is over 60 euros, then you should buy the card. Remember, it also saves you 9 euros on public transportation.

You’re going to be very busy during this One Day in Amsterdam Itinerary! After all, we only have one day, so we will visit most of the must-see attractions in Amsterdam. From famous museums to charming neighborhoods, we’ve got you covered with this jam-packed itinerary.
Morning
The 9 Streets
To start this day trip to Amsterdam, let’s head to the Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes). This area is located in the heart of the city and is known for its boutiques, vintage shops, and cafes. The 9 Streets is also known to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas in Amsterdam, with its beautiful streets and canals. There’s no need for a strict agenda here, but enjoy the views and get a taste of the local culture.
Jordaan Neighborhood
Another beautiful spot in Amsterdam is the Jordaan Neighborhood! Here, you’ll find cozy cafés, stunning canals, and plenty of bikes! Did you know that Amsterdam’s Canal Ring is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Take a stroll through the charming streets and pop into a shop or two. If you’re in Amsterdam on a Monday or Saturday, be sure to check out the Noordermarkt—a lively market where you can find everything from fresh produce and organic food to cool antiques and handmade goodies. We thought it was a great place to soak up the local vibe and pick up some unique souvenirs.
Anne Frank House
Within the Jordaan neighborhood, you’ll also find the famous Anne Frank House. This historical site is where young Anne Frank hid with her family during World War II and wrote her famous diary. It’s a very powerful and sad experience to visit the house and learn about the horrors and history of the Holocaust. Make sure to book your tickets in advance as there is no way you’ll be able to buy them same day. Tickets are sold 6 weeks in advance and are released every Tuesday at 10 AM CEST. They sell out quickly, so make sure you’re on the website buying right at 10 AM! If you wait even an hour after, there’s a good chance they already sell out. The tickets are timed and you only get about 45 minutes in the house, so it will not take up a huge chunk of your day.
Dam Square
After visiting the Anne Frank House, take a stroll over to the nearby Dam Square, one of the most famous and oldest squares in Amsterdam. It’s filled with history and surrounded by unique architecture. One must-see attraction is The Royal Palace Amsterdam, originally built as a city hall in the 17th century and later converted into a royal palace for official events. Another important site in Dam Square is the National Monument, dedicated to the victims of World War II. For a bit of fun, you can visit Madame Tussauds Amsterdam and interact with celebrity wax figures, or check out an exhibition at the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). There are many restaurants in this area, so it might also be a good time to grab lunch or have a delicious cookie from Biscuiterie Van Stapele!
Afternoon
Damrak Waterfront
Our favorite place we visited in Amsterdam is the Damrak Waterfront. In our opinion, the Damrak Waterfront is the most photogenic spot in the city and you’ll see the famous view of the Amsterdam canal houses. While here, we also did a canal cruise! This is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam and a canal cruise is a requirement in our opinion! If you’re in Amsterdam in the summer, we recommend doing an open-air canal cruise because it’s much more enjoyable than being inside a hot boat and feels more authentic. The cruise is about an hour long and you’ll get to see many of the major sights of Amsterdam from a unique perspective. If you’re in the mood for a snack, get some delicious fries from Manneken Pis Damrak!
van Wonderen Stroopwafels
A famous dessert in Amsterdam is stroopwafels, a type of waffle cookie filled with caramel syrup and other flavors. One of the best places to try these delicious treats is at van Wonderen Stroopwafels. Here, you can watch as they make fresh stroopwafels right in front of you and top them with various toppings like chocolate, sprinkles, or nuts. Ours was topped with Oreos which was so good! The only downfall here was the price! One stroopwafel costs about 14 euros, which is insane! We felt like we had to get one while in Amsterdam, but we totally understand if you want to skip this stop.
Rijksmuseum
After a delicious stroopwafel, head to the National Museum of the Netherlands, the Rijksmuseum. This massive museum is home to over 7,000 works of art and historical artifacts, including some famous pieces by Dutch masters like Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Be sure to check out the Gallery of Honour where you can see some of the most renowned paintings in Dutch history. The museum also has a beautiful garden and an outdoor sculpture collection for you to explore. It’s definitely worth spending a few hours here if you have the time! If you don’t have the time to go inside, we still think it’s worth walking around the outside and visiting the gardens.
Van Gogh Museum
You probably won’t have enough time to visit the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, so choose what interests you most. The Van Gogh Museum is dedicated solely to the works of Vincent van Gogh, one of the most famous Dutch painters. This museum houses over 200 paintings and 500 drawings by van Gogh, as well as letters and other personal items that give insight into his life and artistic process.
Vondelpark
After visiting a museum of your choice, take a relaxing stroll through the beautiful Vondelpark. This spacious park is a favorite among both locals and tourists, offering scenic walking paths, ponds, playgrounds, and even an open-air theater for summer performances. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some natural beauty after a day of exploring the city.
Evening
A'DAM Lookout
At the A’DAM Lookout, there are an endless amount of things to do! There’s a 360º Sky Deck, the ‘Over the Edge’ swing, and a Panoramic Restaurant. The lookout offers stunning views of the city, including the iconic skyline and famous canals. The ‘Over the Edge’ swing is not for the fainthearted, as it swings you over the edge of the building at a height of almost 100 meters!
Red Light District
If you’re out late and looking to experience Amsterdam’s nightlife, the Red Light District is worth a visit. Known for its lively bars, clubs, and coffee shops, it’s also famous for its red-lit windows and distinct atmosphere. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea—including us—it’s certainly a unique and interesting part of the city’s culture.

Brussels
A great day trip from Amsterdam is a trip to the charming city of Brussels, Belgium. Just a short (2-3 hours) train of bus ride away, you can enjoy delicious Belgian chocolate and waffles, visit the famous Grand Place square (our favorite), or even take a tour of the EU Parliament! Zaanse Schans
Another day trip option is a visit to Zaanse Schans, a picturesque village just outside of Amsterdam. Here you can explore traditional Dutch windmills and learn about the history of clogs and cheese making in the Netherlands. Oftentimes, a day trip to Zaanse Schans includes other stops in Edam, Volendam, and Marken.
The Hague

It’s a laid-back spot with boutique shops, art galleries, and is close to the Anne Frank House and Westerkerk, making it a top choice for those wanting a local feel within walking distance of major attractions.
De Pijp
Trendy and multicultural, De Pijp is a vibrant area packed with quirky shops, street art, and international restaurants. It’s home to the famous Albert Cuyp Market and has a lively, bohemian feel. If you love food and a hip atmosphere, De Pijp is perfect, while still being close to the city’s main sights.
Oud Zuid (Museum Quarter)
For art lovers, Oud Zuid is home to the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Vondelpark. This elegant area has an upscale vibe with stylish hotels, high-end shopping, and a quieter atmosphere. It’s ideal if you want easy access to museums and a peaceful retreat after exploring.

If you’re using public transportation, the GVB 24-hour pass is a great option. It gives you unlimited access to the trams, buses, and metros for a full day. This is especially convenient if you plan to hop between different neighborhoods. You can buy the pass at GVB ticket machines or online. We think this is a MUST.
3. Currency
The currency in Amsterdam is the Euro (€). Many places accept card payments, but it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand, especially for smaller purchases or in more local areas. ATMs are easy to find around the city, and most will accept international cards. Be sure to check with your bank about any foreign transaction fees before your trip.

Overall, we really enjoyed our time in Amsterdam and thought it was the perfect day trip! It’s a beautiful and unique city that you won’t want to miss. It really reminded us of a more spread out Venice, but in the North. Our favorite things to do here were the canal cruise and hanging out at the Damrak Waterfront, so make sure you take part in these activities.
