27 Things to Know Before Visiting Brussels, Belgium

Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the heart of the European Union is a city full of history, culture, and, of course, world-famous waffles. When we were planning our first trip to Brussels, we had a lot of questions. We knew about the waffles and the chocolate, but there were so many little things we didn’t think to look up—things that ended up shaping our trip in ways we hadn’t expected. After spending time exploring the city, we picked up some useful tips that made our experience even better.

We wanted to share those insights with you—along with a few fun facts—to help you make the most of your trip to Belgium’s capital!

Whether you’re visiting for a quick city break or using it as a base to explore Belgium, here are 27 things you should know before you go to Brussels.

1. Brussels Has Two Airports

Brussels Airport (BRU) is the main international airport, located about 20 minutes from the city center by train. Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) is further away and mainly serves budget airlines, so be prepared for a longer transfer if you fly into Charleroi.

2. Brussels Central Station Is a Transport Hub

Brussels Central Station is the main railway hub for domestic and international trains. If you’re taking a train to Paris, Amsterdam, or other European cities, you’ll likely depart from here or Brussels Midi Station.

3. Brussels Is Bilingual

Brussels has two official languages: French and Dutch. Most signs are in both languages and while French is more widely spoken, you’ll also hear Dutch and English in many places.

4. English Is Common, But Not Universal

Many people in Brussels, especially in touristy areas, speak English. We didn’t have any trouble speaking with locals during our entire stay, which made it a lot easier to get around when we had questions. However, learning a few basic French phrases like “Bonjour” (hello) and “Merci” (thank you) will be appreciated at shops, restaurants, etc.

5. The Currency Is the Euro (€)

Belgium is part of the Eurozone, so the official currency is the Euro. Credit cards are widely accepted, but we recommend having some cash for restaurants and street shopping.

6. Belgian Waffles Come in Two Styles

There are two main types of waffles: Brussels waffles (rectangular, light, and crispy) and Liège waffles (smaller, denser, and caramelized). We liked the Liège waffles more, but you can’t really go wrong with either choice. Try both to see which one you prefer!

7. A Few Museums Have Free Entry on the First Wednesday of the Month

Many museums in Brussels offer free entry on the first Wednesday of the month, making it a great time to explore places like the Magritte Museum, Oldmasters Museum, Modern Museum, and Institute of Natural Sciences.

8. Public Transport Is Efficient

Brussels has a well-connected metro, tram, and bus system. A MOBIB card or contactless payment makes it easy to get around.

9. Walking Is the Best Way to Explore the City Center

15. EU Headquarters Are Here

Brussels is the political hub of the European Union. You can visit the European Parliament or take a tour of the European Quarter.

16. Sundays Are Quiet

Many shops and restaurants close on Sundays, so plan accordingly. Museums and tourist sites remain open, though.

19. Tipping Isn’t Mandatory

Service charges are usually included in restaurant bills, so tipping is not expected but always appreciated for good service.

27. Three Days in Brussels is Most Ideal Amount of Time

We spent two full days in Brussels before and felt like we saw most of what we wanted, but definitely had to squeeze things in. Three days would be the most ideal amount of time so you aren’t rushing. If you’re considering one day in Brussels, this is certainly possible as well, but you will have to pick and choose what you see and do. In our opinion, One Day in Brussels is a lot better than none, so plan that day trip if you’re in nearby Belgian cities or Paris.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to make the most of your Brussels trip. Enjoy the Belgian waffles, Belgian chocolate, and historic charm! Thank you for supporting our blog and safe travels!
