4 Days in Slovenia Itinerary

4 Days in Slovenia: Best Things to Do & Places to Visit

Slovenia is one of the most underrated countries in Europe, and after spending four days exploring it, we can confidently say it deserves a spot near the top of your bucket list! From turquoise lakes and fairytale castles to incredible caves and towering mountains, Slovenia has so much variety packed into a relatively small country.

We spent four days exploring Slovenia, visiting Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Predjama Castle, Postojna Cave, the Julian Alps, and the beautiful Logar Valley. We even went white-water rafting on the stunning Soča River, which ended up being one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip!

In this guide, we’re sharing our 4-day Slovenia itinerary, including the best things to do, places worth visiting, and practical tips to help you plan your own trip. We’ll also cover how to get to Slovenia, why we recommend renting a car, and what we’d do differently if we had more time.

Let’s get into it!

Table of Contents

How to Get to Slovenia

Getting to Slovenia wasn’t as straightforward as we’d expected, particularly when traveling from other European destinations.

Despite Ljubljana being the country’s capital, flight connections weren’t as convenient as we’d hoped. We couldn’t find a direct flight from Dubrovnik to Ljubljana, so we ended up flying to Zagreb, Croatia, and then taking a bus to Ljubljana.

The bus journey took around two hours, making it a manageable option once we arrived in Zagreb. If you’re traveling from the United States, you’ll need to connect through another airport rather than rely on a nonstop flight to Ljubljana. Depending on your departure city and travel dates, you may find connections through major European hubs or other nearby airports.

Our advice is to compare the total travel time and cost rather than looking only at flights into Ljubljana. Nearby airports can sometimes make sense, but you’ll need to account for the additional ground transportation.

Since we were already traveling around the Balkans, flying to Zagreb and taking the bus worked well for us.

Getting Around Slovenia: Should You Rent a Car?

Driving in Slovenia
Driving in Slovenia on the highway!

We highly recommend renting a car for this Slovenia itinerary.

Slovenia is a relatively small country, and you can reach many destinations within a few hours of driving. However, some of the best places to visit are spread across different regions, and having your own vehicle gives you much more flexibility.

We stayed in an Airbnb near Ljubljana because the city was relatively central for the places we wanted to visit. From there, we could explore the surrounding countryside and take day trips without needing to change accommodation every night.

It also gave us the freedom to stop at scenic viewpoints whenever we wanted, which was a big part of what made the trip so enjoyable.

Could you visit Slovenia without a car? Absolutely. You can use buses and organized tours to reach some of the major attractions, particularly from Ljubljana. However, you’d need to plan your days more carefully, and visiting multiple places in different regions could become more complicated. For us, the freedom of having a car was worth it.

A few things to keep in mind before renting:

  • Check the driving requirements: Slovenia requires a valid motorway vignette for vehicles using its motorways. That’s a fancy way of saying tolls. Confirm whether your rental includes one.
  • Be prepared for mountain roads: Routes through the Julian Alps can be narrow and winding, so drive according to your comfort level and the conditions.
  • Allow extra time: Driving distances can be short on paper, but mountain roads and sightseeing stops can add considerable time.
  • Check seasonal access: Cable cars, mountain roads, hiking trails, and some attractions can have seasonal schedules or closures.
  • Be mindful of speed limits: Slovenia’s motorway speed limit is 130 km/h (about 81 mph), which feels crazy fast if you’re used to driving in the U.S.! You won’t spend all your time on highways, but when you do, the pace of traffic can be surprisingly quick, with most drivers cruising around 85–90 mph. Keep in mind that speed cameras are used throughout the country, so don’t let the flow of traffic pressure you into speeding. Always follow the posted speed limits!

If you’re comfortable driving, a rental car is easily our preferred way to explore Slovenia.

Day 1: Ljubljana, Predjama Castle & Postojna Cave

Explore Ljubljana's Old Town

Franciscan Church of the Annunciation
Franciscan Church of the Annunciation in Old Town Ljubljana

We started our Slovenia trip in Ljubljana, the country’s capital. We spent about half a day exploring the city, and while you could easily spend a full day here, we felt like we saw everything we wanted in a few hours.

Our recommendation is to focus on Ljubljana’s Old Town. It’s charming, walkable, and full of beautiful architecture, riverside cafes, and historic sights.

One of the most recognizable landmarks is Ljubljana Castle, which sits on a hill overlooking the city. You can take a funicular or walk up to the castle to explore its grounds and enjoy panoramic views of Ljubljana. We didn’t go inside, but we could easily admire it from the Old Town, and it makes a beautiful backdrop to the city.

Next, head over to Triple Bridge, one of Ljubljana’s most famous landmarks. As the name suggests, this is a group of three bridges crossing the Ljubljanica River. It’s a great place to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere along the riverfront.

Right behind the bridge, you’ll find the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. This pink church was our favorite sight in Ljubljana! The distinctive pink facade makes it stand out from the surrounding buildings, and we thought it was one of the most beautiful and unique landmarks in the city.

We’d definitely recommend stopping here, even if you’re only spending a few hours in Ljubljana. You can also visit the Central Market, where you’ll find local produce, flowers, souvenirs, and other regional products. It’s a nice place to wander through while exploring the Old Town.

Overall, we enjoyed Ljubljana, but we’d prioritize the rest of Slovenia if you’re working with limited time. The capital is lovely, but the country’s natural scenery and unique attractions were the real highlights for us.

Visit Predjama Castle

After exploring Ljubljana, it’s time to head out of the city and visit one of the coolest castles we’ve ever seen!

Predjama Castle is built directly into the mouth of a massive cliffside cave, making it unlike any traditional castle we’ve visited. It’s hard to appreciate just how unique the structure is until you see it in person. The castle has a fascinating history filled with stories of medieval life, secret passages, and its famous former resident, the knight Erasmus of Lueg. Its position within the cliff also helped make it a formidable defensive stronghold.

One thing that surprised us was how much there is to explore inside. The castle is much bigger than it appears from the outside, and you can walk through its rooms and learn more about its history. We thought this place was absolutely awesome, and it’s one of those attractions that photographs don’t fully do justice.

Our recommendation: Don’t skip Predjama Castle when visiting Slovenia! It’s such a unique sight, and we haven’t seen many places like it anywhere else in Europe.

Explore Postojna Cave

Dylan posing in front of the Postojna Caves

Our final stop of the day was Postojna Cave, and honestly, this was one of the most unique places we’ve ever visited. That might sound like a bold claim, but it’s difficult to explain just how incredible this place is until you’ve experienced it yourself.

The experience begins with a ride on a small underground train that takes you deep into the cave system. As you travel through the enormous chambers and tunnels, you’ll quickly realize just how massive this place is. The scale is almost impossible to comprehend!

After the train ride, you’ll continue on a guided walking tour through the caves, where you can admire the incredible rock formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and enormous underground chambers.

We’ve visited plenty of impressive natural attractions around the world, but Postojna Cave was unlike anything else we’ve experienced. It’s one of those places where you keep looking around thinking, “How is this even real?”

We purchased our Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave tickets together as a bundle through the official Postojna Cave website, which made planning these two attractions easy.

If you’re visiting Slovenia, we’d highly recommend making time for both. They’re relatively close to each other and make a fantastic combination for your first day. PS: Don’t forget to dress warmly at the Postojna Cave! The caves are pretty cold at about 10°C (50°F) year-round.

Day 2: Lake Bled

Stop at the Church of St. Primus and Felician

On the way to Lake Bled, we made a stop at the Church of St. Primus and Felician. This small, picturesque church is surrounded by beautiful countryside and makes for a peaceful stop along the way.

We thought it was a cute and idyllic little spot that was worth taking some time to appreciate before continuing toward Lake Bled.

Visit Lake Bled

Lake Bled
Beautiful Lake Bled!

Lake Bled was one of the places we were most excited to visit in Slovenia, and it absolutely lived up to the hype! Sometimes, you visit a destination you’ve seen all over social media and wonder whether it’ll live up to your expectations. Lake Bled didn’t disappoint us at all.

The turquoise water, surrounding mountains, and little church sitting on an island in the middle of the lake make it look like something straight out of a fairytale. It’s easily one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited in Europe.

Our biggest recommendation is to take your time here. Walk along the lake, enjoy the scenery, and don’t feel like you need to rush from one attraction to the next.

Take a Traditional Boat to Bled Island

Lake Bled Plenta Boat Ride
Pletna Boat to Bled Island

One of our favorite things to do at Lake Bled was taking a traditional wooden pletna boat out to Bled Island.

The island is home to the Church of the Assumption of Mary, which sits beautifully against the surrounding mountains. It’s an iconic sight, and we think getting out to the island is a must during your visit.

Once you arrive, you can walk around the small island, visit the church, and enjoy the views back toward the village of Bled. The island is small enough to explore in around 15 minutes, although you’ll want to allow extra time to explore the shop and have some gelato!

The boat ride is a memorable way to experience the lake, and seeing the scenery from the water gives you a different perspective of this incredible place.

Walk Around Bled and Try Bled Cake

After visiting the island, spend some time wandering around the village of Bled. There are souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes, and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the views.

One local specialty you shouldn’t miss is Bled cream cake, known locally as kremšnita. It’s a layered dessert made with custard, cream, and flaky pastry that’s become famous in the area.

Since we’re gluten-free, we were excited to find a gluten-free version at Lincer, a little outside the main village. It’s always a bonus when we can try a local specialty without missing out because of our dietary restrictions!

While in Lake Bled, you can also visit Bled Castle, which sits high above the lake and offers fantastic views of the island and surrounding mountains.

Our biggest piece of advice for Lake Bled is simple: enjoy the scenery. Walk along the shoreline, take plenty of photos, and give yourself time to appreciate how beautiful this place really is.

Day 3: Triglav National Park & White-Water Rafting on the Soča River

Day three was all about adventure! We headed toward Bovec, a small town in northwestern Slovenia known for its outdoor activities and beautiful Alpine scenery. Our main goal was to go white-water rafting on the Soča River, but the drive there ended up being an experience in itself.

Drive Through Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park
Stop through Triglav National Park

On your way to Bovec, you can stop at Lake Jasna, a beautiful Alpine lake near Kranjska Gora. It’s a great place to stretch your legs, take some photos, and admire the crystal-clear water surrounded by mountains. It’s also a convenient stop before continuing along the scenic mountain route through Triglav National Park.

The drive through Triglav National Park, part of the Julian Alps, was absolutely insane! The roads wind back and forth through the mountains like a snake, with sharp turns, steep sections, and incredible scenery around almost every corner.

There are plenty of viewpoints where you can pull over and take in the views, and we’d highly recommend stopping at a few along the way. Some of our favorite moments came from simply getting out of the car, admiring the mountains, and taking photos.

We chose this route because we wanted to enjoy the scenery of Triglav and it didn’t force us to get to Bovec by going into Italy first. The drive from Ljubljana takes around two to three hours, depending on your route and stops, so allow extra time to enjoy it.

Dylan was comfortable driving these roads, but if you’re not confident driving on narrow, winding mountain roads, we’d recommend considering an alternative route. If you’re up for the adventure, though, this is an incredible way to experience the Julian Alps!

Go White-Water Rafting on the Soča River

White water rafting was so fun!

Once we arrived in Bovec, it was time for the main event: white-water rafting on the Soča River!

This ended up being one of our favorite experiences of the entire Slovenia trip. If you’re looking for something adventurous to add to your itinerary, we’d absolutely recommend it.

The Soča River is famous for its striking emerald-green and turquoise water, and the surrounding mountain scenery makes the experience even better. You’re not just enjoying the rapids; you’re doing it in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable.

We went rafting as a group, which made the experience even more fun. Our guide was awesome and did a great job making everyone feel comfortable throughout the trip. He kept things fun, helped us feel at ease on the water, and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Having a great guide really made a difference!

One unexpected bonus was the opportunity to stop at certain spots along the river and jump off rocks into the water. It was an exciting addition to the experience and made the trip even more memorable!

You don’t need to be an experienced rafter to enjoy a guided trip suited to your ability level, making this a great activity to do with friends or family. After rafting, you can spend some time exploring Bovec or simply enjoy the surrounding scenery before heading back.

Our tip: If you’re planning to go rafting, book your trip in advance and check the departure time before setting off. The mountain drive is beautiful, but you’ll want enough time to enjoy the stops without rushing to make your reservation!

Day 4: Velika Planina & Logar Valley

Our final day in Slovenia took us to two more incredible destinations: Velika Planina and Logar Valley. If there’s one thing Slovenia does exceptionally well, it’s natural scenery. And day four was another reminder of just how much variety this small country has to offer.

Visit Velika Planina

The views at Velika Planina were incredible!

Velika Planina is a beautiful high-altitude Alpine plateau known for its traditional shepherds’ huts, open mountain pastures, and incredible views.

We took the cable car up the mountain, which was an experience in itself. Once at the top, we were greeted by a landscape that felt completely different from the places we’d visited earlier in the trip. The traditional wooden huts scattered across the plateau are one of its defining features. They give the area a distinctive character, and walking among them feels like stepping into a different world.

We also loved seeing the wildlife and taking in the surrounding mountain scenery. There are several walking trails to explore, so you can make your visit as relaxed or active as you’d like.

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, it’s a fantastic place to get outside, take photos, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. There was even a lone swing here that was randomly placed and fun to ride.

Explore Logar Valley

Logar Valley
Cheesy Posing in Logar Valley

Next, we headed to Logar Valley, also known as Logarska Dolina, which sits among the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

This was another one of our favorite places in Slovenia, and we captured some of our best photos of the entire trip here!

The valley is surrounded by enormous mountains, green meadows, and beautiful Alpine scenery. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and feels like the perfect place to slow down and appreciate nature.

What stood out to us most was the scale of the mountains. They rise dramatically around the valley, creating incredible views in almost every direction.

We’d recommend spending time simply driving through the valley, stopping at viewpoints, and enjoying the scenery rather than rushing straight to the next attraction.

If you love photography, this is a place you’ll want to have your camera ready for!

Hike to Rinka Waterfall

Rinka Falls
Cool waterfall in Logar Valley

While visiting Logar Valley, we also took a short hike to Rinka Waterfall, one of the area’s best-known natural attractions.

The hike took us around 45 minutes round trip, and we thought it was well worth the effort.

The trail leads through beautiful mountain scenery to the waterfall, where you can get close enough to appreciate the rushing water and the surrounding cliffs. It’s a great addition to your visit without requiring a full day of hiking

We enjoyed being able to experience another side of Slovenia’s natural beauty, and the waterfall was a fantastic way to wrap up our four days in the country. If you’re visiting Logar Valley, we’d definitely recommend making time for this hike.

Is 4 Days Enough for Slovenia?

Rinka Falls Hike
Rinka Falls Hike

We thought four days was a great amount of time for Slovenia, especially if you want to see several of the country’s major highlights without spending your entire trip traveling between destinations.

We managed to experience a little bit of everything: a charming capital city, a fairytale lake, unusual castles, enormous caves, mountain scenery, waterfalls, and an exciting outdoor adventure.

The country’s relatively compact size makes it possible to experience a surprising amount in a short time, particularly if you rent a car and plan your itinerary carefully. That said, if we could do the trip all over again, we’d love to spend a full week in Slovenia.

There are so many more places we’d like to explore, and having extra time would allow us to slow down, spend longer in the mountains, and discover more of the country’s smaller towns and hidden gems.

Four days is a fantastic introduction to Slovenia, but a week would give you even more opportunities to appreciate everything it has to offer.

What to Do in Slovenia If You Have More Time

If you have more than four days in Slovenia, there are a couple of additional destinations we’d consider adding to your itinerary.

Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is another beautiful Alpine lake located in Triglav National Park. It’s often overshadowed by Lake Bled, but it’s well worth considering if you have extra time.

The lake is surrounded by mountains and offers opportunities for swimming, hiking, kayaking, and simply enjoying the scenery. It’s a great option if you’d like to spend more time outdoors and explore another part of the Julian Alps.

We’d love to return to Slovenia and spend more time in this area.

Piran

Piran is a picturesque coastal town on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast, known for its historic architecture, narrow streets, and beautiful waterfront.

It’s a completely different experience from the Alpine landscapes and lakes featured in the rest of this itinerary. If you enjoy historic towns and Mediterranean scenery, Piran would be a great addition to a longer Slovenia trip. You can tell there is a strong Italian and Venetian influence in this town, which makes it unique from anywhere else in the country.

Final Thoughts: Is Slovenia Worth Visiting?

Lake Bled
We Love Slovenia!

Absolutely! Slovenia is one of the most underrated countries in Europe, and after visiting, it has become one of our top five favorite countries we’ve ever been to.

What makes it so special is the incredible variety of experiences packed into such a small place. You can explore a charming European capital in the morning, visit a medieval castle built into a mountain, walk through an enormous underground cave, and spend the following day surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Europe.

We loved Lake Bled, thought white-water rafting on the Soča River was an absolute blast, and were blown away by places like Postojna Cave and Logar Valley.

Even Ljubljana, which we enjoyed, was one of the places we felt we could spend the least amount of time in compared with the rest of the country. That’s not to say you should skip the capital, but rather that there’s so much else to discover!

Another big plus is that Slovenia generally feels less overwhelmed by tourism than some of Europe’s more famous destinations. You’ll still encounter plenty of visitors at popular attractions, especially Lake Bled during peak season, but we loved being able to explore a country that still feels relatively underrated.

If we could change one thing about our trip, it would be spending more time there. Four days gave us an excellent introduction, but we’d happily return for a full week or longer.

If Slovenia isn’t already on your bucket list, we’d highly recommend adding it. It’s beautiful, adventurous, diverse, and one of those countries that leaves you wanting to come back for more.
