How Long Should You Stay in London?
Visiting London is a beast! With endless attractions and activities, it can be overwhelming to try and fit everything into a short trip. That’s why we recommend staying in London for at least 3 days to get a taste of the city’s culture. Three days is the perfect amount of time to see the iconic landmarks and take in the rich history, but if you want to explore more on the outskirts of London, you may want to extend your trip to 5 days.
Where Exactly is London?
London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, located in the southeastern part of the country. London is the largest city in the UK, with a population of over 8 million people. It is a major global city and has been a center for arts, fashion, and finance for centuries.
Â
Ideal Times to Visit London
We’ve visited London three times and can confidently say that the best time to visit is during the summer (June–August)! Yes, it’s busy, but London is busy all year round. What makes summer special is the beautiful weather, perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. While London can be cold and rainy throughout much of the year, summer is warmer and drier.
Â
However, if you want to go during the “slow season” and save some money, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). The weather may be a bit cooler but there are still plenty of indoor attractions to enjoy.
Why Visit London?
There are so many reasons on why you should visit London that it’s hard to know where to begin. History, culture, architecture, food, parks, nightlife – London has it all! No matter what your interests are, you can find something to do in this bustling city.
Â
For history lovers, there is no shortage of landmarks and museums to explore. From the iconic Big Ben and Buckingham Palace to the fascinating British Museum and Tower of London, you can find yourself in centuries of English history.Â
Â
But London isn’t just about its past – it’s also a hub for modern art galleries and world-renowned theaters. You can catch a play at the famous Globe Theatre or visit the Tate Modern for a taste of contemporary art.
Â
For those who enjoy the outdoors, London has plenty of green spaces to relax in. Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, and St. James’s Park all offer beautiful scenery and opportunities for picnics and strolls.Â
Â
And when the sun goes down, London truly comes alive. With a vibrant nightlife scene that ranges from pubs to the great atmosphere on the West End, there’s always something going on in this city that never sleeps. Think New York City, but in the United Kingdom!
How to Get Around London
When it comes to getting around London, there are plenty of options for transportation! A fun way to travel is by taking the famous red double-decker buses. These buses cover all areas of the city and offer a great view of your surroundings as you ride.
Â
For those looking to get around quickly, the London Underground – also known as the Tube – is a convenient option. This is the most popular option and what you’ll surely be using most of your stay because it reaches all of London! Make sure to grab an Oyster card, a rechargeable smart card that allows you to travel on all forms of public transportation in London.
Â
If you prefer cycling, London has a bike-sharing program called Santander Cycles, commonly known as “Boris Bikes” after former mayor Boris Johnson who introduced them. Simply find a docking station and use your credit card to rent a bike for a small fee.
Â
For longer journeys, trains are a great option. London has several main train stations that connect the city to other parts of the UK. You can also take the iconic Eurostar train from London to Paris or Brussels in just a few hours.
Â
Lastly, don’t forget about London’s famous black cabs! These taxis are easily recognizable and can be found on the street or designated taxi stands. While they may be more expensive than other options, they provide a comfortable and private way to get around the city.Â
Is the London Pass Worth It?
So you’re visiting London and wondering if the London Pass by Go City is worth it? Let’s break it down for you.
Â
The London Pass is an all-in-one sightseeing card that gives you access to over 95 top attractions in the city. It also includes skip-the-line entry at some sights, a free hop-on hop-off bus tour, and discounts at restaurants and shops.
Â
But is it really worth the cost? Well, it ultimately depends on your travel style and itinerary. If you plan on visiting many of the top attractions, then yes, the pass can save you both time and money! The cost may seem high when you buy it, but you will quickly see how much money it saves you if you’re itinerary is visiting many of the top attractions in London.
Â
However, if you’re not interested in many of the attractions or prefer to explore off-the-beaten-path, then the pass may not be worth it for you. Consider doing some research beforehand to see which attractions you really want to visit and how much they cost individually.Â
Â
Another factor to consider is how long you will be in London. The pass comes in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 10-day options. The longer your stay in London, the more worth it the pass will be! Pro tip on how to save even more money! Sign up for their email offers rather than booking right away. They will send you a 10-15% discount code to your email trying to convince you to buy once you’ve shown some interest.Â
3 Days in London Itinerary at a Glance
This London Itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your three days in this historic and vibrant city.
Â
On Day 1, we’ll explore London’s iconic landmarks and wrap up the evening with a show in the renowned West End.
Â
Day 2 is all about uncovering London’s rich history, diving into centuries-old stories that shaped this beautiful city.Â
Â
Finally, on Day 3, we’ll hangout in the beauty of London’s green spaces and step into the magical world of Harry Potter.
Â
Let’s dive in!
Day 1: Iconic Landmarks & Evening in the West End
Palace of Westminster & Big Ben
Start your first day in London by visiting the iconic Palace of Westminster, home to the British Parliament! This is also where you can see the famous Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben, a symbol of London and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben underwent a four-year restoration that was completed in the summer of 2022.
Â
Even before the restoration, this landmark was incredible, but afterward, it’s even more beautiful! The clock faces were restored to their original Prussian Blue, and it was definitely the right choice. Overall, the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben is one of our absolute favorite landmarks in the entire world! It’s one of the reasons we keep coming back, and when you see it, you’ll understand why!
Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey is another must-see near Parliament. It’s a magnificent Gothic church that has been the site of coronations and royal weddings for centuries. The architecture and history are simply breathtaking, and it’s definitely worth taking a tour inside! Plus, you can also visit the tombs of notable figures such as Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
London Eye
A short walk from Westminster Abbey is the famous London Eye. This giant ferris wheel offers stunning views of the city and is a must-do for any tourist. It can be expensive, but the views are worth every penny if you’re not afraid of heights!
Buckingham Palace
When in London, you MUST visit Buckingham Palace, the residence of the British royal family. If you’re here during the summer months, you may even have the chance to tour the State Rooms!
Â
The first couple of times we visited London, we weren’t here during the short period when the State Rooms are open to the public, but we’re so glad we finally got to go in! It’s incredible to see the opulence of the palace and just how much gold is really in there.
Â
If you’re not visiting at the right time of year to tour the State Rooms, you can still witness the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony outside. It’s a must-see event that takes place every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 10:45 AM.
Â
Another great way to experience Buckingham Palace is by taking a stroll through St. James’s Park, located right next to the palace. This park offers stunning views of Buckingham Palace and is also home to beautiful gardens and serene ponds.
Leicester Square
After Buckingham Palace, we decided to head over to Leicester Square. This square is known for its vibrant atmosphere and street performers. It’s also a popular spot for movie premieres.Â
Â
Within Leicester Square, we visited the M&M’s World store, which is a four-story building dedicated to all things M&M’s. Not a must, but it’s a fun little stop! Next door is also a LEGO store, perfect for LEGO lovers of all ages.
Â
Beyond M&M World and the LEGO Store, there is so much to see and do in Leicester Square so just explore and see what catches your eye! If you’re ready for dinner, one of our favorite restaurants in Leicester Square is Prezzo Italian Restaurant! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is perfect for a nice chill dinner!
West End London
If you’re a musical theatre fan, then you can’t miss West End London! This area, often called the “Broadway of the UK,” hosts some of the best musicals in the world. From classic shows like Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera to Hamilton and Back to the Future, the options are endless. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you can also see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre.
Â
On our last visit to London, we saw Hamilton and Back to the Future, and both were absolutely incredible! The energy and talent in each show are unmatched. Be sure to book your tickets early, as they tend to sell out quickly.
Â
After catching a show, you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the West End or head back to your accommodation to recharge for Day 2 in London.
Day 2: Discover London’s Rich History
Wembley Stadium Tour & Wimbledon
If you have the time, we highly recommend watching a match or taking a tour of Wembley Stadium and/or Wimbledon! Wembley Stadium is a famous soccer stadium and has hosted many iconic events, such as the Olympics, Live Aid, and the World Cup.Â
Â
On the otherhand, Wimbledon is known for its prestigious tennis tournament and offers tours of its facilities. Wimbledon is one of the most famous tennis venues in the world and a must-see for sports fans.
Tower of London
When visiting London, a trip to the Tower of London is a must. This historic castle has served as a royal palace, prison, and even a zoo during its 900-year history. Built in 1066 by William the Conqueror, it symbolized his power and dominance over England. Today, the Tower of London houses the Crown Jewels, including the renowned Koh-i-Noor diamond.
Â
Stroll along the castle walls and explore the various towers within the grounds. Don’t miss the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony, where guards in iconic red uniforms march to protect the castle.
Tower Bridge
Some often mistake this for the London Bridge, but Tower Bridge is a distinct and iconic landmark of London. Built in 1894, Tower Bridge is a bascule and suspension bridge spanning the River Thames.
Â
Take a tour inside to learn about its history and enjoy stunning views of London from its glass-floor walkways. You can also visit the Victorian Engine Rooms, which house the original steam engines that once powered the bridge. Tower Bridge is just a 5-minute walk from the Tower of London, so it’s impossible to miss. Overall, Tower Bridge is breathtaking and one of our favorite photo ops in all of London!
View from the Shard
For the best view of London, head to the top of the Shard. This 95-story skyscraper is the tallest building in the United Kingdom and offers 360-degree views of the city. The viewing platform on the 72nd floor offers a crazy perspective of London’s iconic landmarks, including Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Tower of London.
Â
For an extra special experience, book a ticket for sunset or nighttime views and watch as the city lights up below you. You can also enjoy a drink or meal at one of the restaurants located within the Shard. Seeing the View from the Shard is absolutely worth it in our opinion as it’s just so insane and beautiful. If you’re personally wondering whether the cost is worth it or not, it’s included if you buy the London Pass!
St. Paul’s Cathedral
No visit to London is complete without seeing St. Paul’s Cathedral. This architectural masterpiece was built between 1675 and 1710 following the Great Fire of London and has remained an important place of worship ever since. Visitors can tour the interior, explore the famous Whispering Gallery, and climb to the top of the dome for breathtaking views of the city. Even if you choose not to go inside, it’s worth visiting to admire the stunning facade and dome from the outside.
Shakespeare's Globe
For a very unique experience in London, we highly recommend a visit to Shakespeare’s Globe. This reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre is where many of William Shakespeare’s plays were written. Visitors can attend performances throughout the year, or opt for a tour of the theatre to learn about its history and architecture.Â
Â
We were lucky to see a performance here called “Comedy of Errors” and it was truly a highlight of our trip. The energy and talent of the actors, combined with the historic setting, made for an unforgettable evening. We highly recommend adding this unique cultural experience to your London itinerary.
The British Museum
One of the world’s most renowned museums, the British Museum in London holds an impressive collection of artifacts from different civilizations across human history. From ancient Egyptian mummies to Greek sculptures, there is something fascinating for everyone here. Plus, admission is free! Don’t miss out on seeing iconic items such as the Rosetta Stone and Parthenon sculptures during your visit.
Â
If you’re a history buff, the British Museum is definitely a must-visit attraction in London. Even if you’re not, we believe you’ll still find something to learn and enjoy, but wouldn’t consider it a must-do.Â
Trafalgar Square & Piccadilly Circus
To wrap up your day in London, make your way to Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus for a dose of the city’s vibrant energy. These iconic landmarks are just a short stroll apart and are must-visits for any traveler. Trafalgar Square is famous for Nelson’s Column and the stunning National Gallery, while Piccadilly Circus buzzes with street performers and dazzling neon lights. At the base of Nelson’s Column are four bronze lions and every time we visit London, we take a fun picture with them!
Â
While you’re in the area, take some time to explore the shops and restaurants around Piccadilly Circus. If you’re up for more, head to Covent Garden! This lively district is packed with street performers, markets, and unique boutiques. It’s the perfect place to find unique souvenirs or simply grab a bite to eat.
Day 3: Green Spaces & The Magical World of Harry Potter!
Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter
By now, if you’ve been reading our blog, you know we’re HUGE Harry Potter fans. So it’s only natural that we go to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour while in London! This is an absolute must for all Harry Potter fans as it takes you behind the scenes of the filming of the entire movie franchise. You can walk through iconic sets like the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, Gringotts Bank, Ministry of Magic, Forbidden Forest, as well as see props and costumes used in the films. Pretty much everything you can think of in Harry Potter can be seen on this tour! We’ve gone twice and each time it has us wanting to come back again and again. Â
Â
Plus, you can enjoy magical experiences like flying on a broom that you can take home a video of, and trying butterbeer (a famous drink in the wizarding world). It’s an unforgettable experience for any fan of the series and we can’t recommend it enough!
Hyde Park
After the studio tour, head back to central London to spend some time in the beautiful Hyde Park. This 350-acre park is a popular spot for locals and tourists, with plenty of green space, walking paths, and even a lake where you can rent an electric pedalo rowboat. It’s the perfect place to relax after a busy day of exploring.
Â
If you happen to be visiting during the summer months, be sure to check out one of the many events held in the park such as concerts, outdoor movie screenings, and food festivals. And if you’re feeling hungry, there are numerous food stands and cafes scattered throughout the park.Â
Â
For those looking for something more active, there are also sports facilities available including tennis courts and an ice rink in the winter.Â
Kensington Palace
After Hyde Park, make your way over to Kensington Palace for a glimpse into the lives of the British royal family. This historic palace has been home to many members of the royal family, including Queen Victoria and Princess Diana.
Â
We enjoyed exploring the State Apartments, which are still used by royalty for official events. Through interactive exhibits, we learned about the palace’s history. Don’t forget to stroll through the beautiful gardens and grab a bite to eat at one of the on-site cafes.
King’s Cross Station
Next stop, King’s Cross Station! This iconic train station is not only a transportation, hub but also holds a special place in the hearts of Harry Potter fans (like us), as it serves as the gateway to Platform 9 ¾. You can even take a photo pushing your own trolley through the famous platform wall! We also loved the Harry Potter shop here as it had so many unique and magical souvenirs.
Â
Following King’s Cross Station, you may choose to conclude your 3rd day in London back in Leicester Square, the West End, or Trafalgar Square for one last unforgettable night!
Day Trips from London
London is the perfect place for day trips! If you plan to stay in the London area for 4-7 days, you must take a day trip or two. Below are the best options for day trips from London:
Â
Edinburgh
This isn’t exactly a “day trip”, but when we were in London for a week, we took a two-day trip to Edinburgh. About a 5-hour train ride out of King’s Cross, Edinburgh is a beautiful and historic city worth exploring! The train ride itself is breathtaking as it takes you through the scenic countryside of England and Scotland. While in Edinburgh, make sure to visit Edinburgh Castle, walk along the Royal Mile, and try some traditional Scottish food. The city is also home to many museums and art galleries, perfect for a rainy day. We can’t recommend this two day trip from London as we just had such a great time here!
Â
Stonehenge
Stonehenge is considered a wonder of the world and a must-see attraction when visiting England. Located about two hours from London, it’s a very doable day trip. The easiest way to visit Stonehenge is by taking a guided tour.Â
Â
Oxford
Unfortunately, the day we planned to head to Oxford, it was pouring rain outside! Even though we weren’t able to go, it’s still considered one of the best day trips from London. Oxford is home to the famous Oxford University and has a rich history dating back to the 12th century.
Â
There are plenty of other options like the Seven Sisters Cliffs, Bath, Windsor Castle, Cambridge, etc., but we have not been to these locations. We will be sure to check them out next time we visit London and if you have the time to go, we’re sure it’d be a great adventure!
Best Places to Stay in London
When visiting London, the options for accommodations are endless. From budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels, there’s something for every type of traveler. We recommend doing a bit of research to find a place that suits your budget and travel style.
Â
Here are some of the most popular areas to stay in London:
Â
Covent Garden: Perfect for its lively atmosphere, amazing shopping, and great dining options.
Notting Hill: A charming neighborhood with colorful houses and the iconic Portobello Road Market.

No matter where you stay, London is super easy to explore thanks to the Tube!
Must-Try Food Spots in London
London is very diverse when it comes to food! Being such a big city, it’s easy to find something to enjoy. A few of our favorite restaurants in London can be seen below:

Each time we’ve gone to London, we make sure to stop at Prezzo! It’s a casual, yet stylish restaurant that serves authentic Italian dishes. From pizza to pasta to salads, you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. Plus, it won’t break the bank!
Â
Gordon Ramsay Street Burger
Yes, yes, we know Gordon Ramsay is known for his fine dining restaurants, but he also has a more casual spot in London! Street Burger serves up great burgers with unique toppings like truffle mayo and crispy onions. Trust us, it’s worth trying.
Â
Circolo Popolare
Rated as one of the best restaurants in London, Circolo Popolare is a must-visit for Italian food lovers. The atmosphere is cozy and lively, with colorful decor and a welcoming staff. Their menu features classic dishes like pizza and pasta, as well as some unique options you won’t find anywhere else.
